The four pilgrimage sites. There are many sacred Buddhist sites across the Indian subcontinent.  The four locations that are the primary destination for Buddhist pilgrims are specified in chapter five of the Mahaparinirvana Sutta.

Two of the four sites are on the UNESCO world heritage list: Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, and  the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya, the seat of the Buddha’s enlightenment.

Thai Buddhism. A good introduction to the Buddhism of Thailand can be found at the website http://www.thaibuddhism.net/, created by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Northern Illinois.

Compilations of textual sources on the Buddha’s life drawn from the Buddhist Pali Canon can be found online from the accesstoinsight.org website, and in the book The Life of the Buddha According to the Pali Canon by Bhikkhu Nanamoli.
